About the 2017 SHPE National Conference Hackathon

Engineer & Code with a Cause is a hackathon that benefits firefighters and first responders in the Greater KCMO region. During this 56 -hour event, teams of engineers (electrical, civil, structural, process) and technologists (developers, designers, project managers) are creating a new solution that will save firefighter lives and reduce the amount of accidents amongst firefighters. This technology will allow firefighters to locate trapped and or downed victims much faster.

Over 43 percent of firefighters are injured while battling a live fire. Firefighters, First Responders, and EMS have a difficult time understanding the environment of the structure (Homes, Apartments, Commercial Buildings) they are entering.

Firefighters have a difficult time understanding navigating the inside of a building while it is on fire. Buildings are full of smoke, very hot (800-1200 Degrees Plus), and they only know where they are going by touch.

Task

The firefighters and first responders would like a web application that connects into their existing technology and provide important information to the fire chiefs, fire captains, and first responders before they enter into a structure.

Goal

Create technology solutions to make it easier for firefighters and first responders to understand important information on a burning structure, and a new solution to navigate a structure as it on fire.
