Participation Guidelines

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION/PARTICIPATION SELECTION

Abstract submission is performed electronically by the date specified above. An abstract is a short (800-word max) description of the work performed including a statement of significance, methods, results (quantitative) and discussion and conclusions. The abstract instructions provide additional hints/advice on creating a competitive abstract. Abstracts may be based on work performed at any time prior to the abstract due date AND within the year of the SHPE Conference. A committee of faculty reviewers will judge abstracts and only students with the highest scoring abstracts will receive an invitation to present at the SHPE Conference.

ORAL PRESENTATIONS

Students interested in participating in the Research Paper presentations must submit an abstract for the Symposium. Selected participants for the research oral presentations will prepare a 10min talk with 5min for questions. Audio/Visual will be provided. Please bring your own laptop. No written paper is required.

RESEARCH POSTER PRESENTATIONS

Students interested in participating in the Research Poster presentations must submit an abstract. Selected presenters in the research poster session must bring a poster to the SHPE meeting and stand by it to answer questions during the Symposia poster session Friday evening.  No written paper is required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

There is no limit to the number of abstracts an individual may submit. There is no limit to the number of co-authors in a single abstract (some co-authors may be faculty advisors/mentors).  The first and presenting author must meet eligibility requirements and is the only author eligible for conference registration fee support and/or prizes.

PARTICIPATION SELECTION CRITERIA

Abstracts will be reviewed and judged by a committee based on the following criteria:

  • Importance of work to technology and/or science is stated or explained
  • Originality of the abstract (i.e. this is a novel investigation)
  • Quantitative results are presented in the abstract
  • Completeness (i.e. the results address the research question, no “will be completed”)
  • The conclusions of the study are stated

AWARDS

The Presenting Students who attend both the Thursday and Friday programming will receive $100 off conference registration (or reimbursement if they have already registered).

The best student presentation in each session will be awarded monetary prizes
